I am technically creative / creatively technical. It’s not that unusual. I never really bought all that ‘left-brain=logical, right-brain=creative person’ stuff. Some people might be better at drawing than they are at maths and vice versa but I reckon that’s mainly down to practice and education rather than genes.
At the minute I’m working at Trafford College in south Manchester teaching people how to do fun stuff with computers and gadgets, but as my lovely fiancee is heading south with her new job, it’s time for me to see what’s going on down London way too.
So, this site is effectively going to be my new portfolio. If you like anything you see, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Ok, here’s the life story bit.
I studied Bsc Media Technology for two years, then BA Interactive Arts for two, which turned out to be a really good idea. Two years learning how creative technology works, then another two experimenting with it and seeing what I could make. I made a 3D animated film called ’080′ and won an award and some nominations. You can see it here.
I’ve made music with computers since I was 12, when I did a seriously bangin’ but sadly lost forever cover of Utah Saints’ Somethin’ Good on my uncle’s Acorn Archimedes with a tracker program called Coconizer – check out this vid of it in action. Later I got into Fasttracker, then Cubase, Cakewalk, Rebirth, Reason, Fruityloops, Ableton and the rest.
At 16 I hooked up with school buddy Mof Gimmers (not his real name), now a prolific and razor-tongued writer, and made a couple of album’s worth of bleeptronic tunery as Cornday, for fledgling label Blox. After two fabulously fun years of cool equipment and spinning our own vinyl, the label went under and we had to move on. I went to the Manchester School of Sound to study Audio Engineering Techniques, and started recording bands on 8-track, ADATs and Protools. It was loads of fun and after the course was over I freelanced there for a while engineering recording sessions.
Soon afterwards I headed off to Uni with another school buddy CheShA (not his real name either) to learn more about computers, networks, programming, filmmaking, drawing, animation, web design etc, and all the other stuff you learn by hanging out with ace studenty folks.
And since then I’ve been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of working with lots more fun people on cool projects, details of which will appear on posts somewhere on this site.
Thanks for reading
Dave
